The Haynes manual says: "with the driveshaft removed from the vehicle and the shaft sections separated at the center bearing, remove the dust shield. Remove the strap which retains the rubber cushion to the support bracket. Separate the cushion, bracket and bearing. Pull the bearing assembly from the driveshaft."

The instructions after that relate to the lubrication and reassmbly of the bearing and driveshaft.

Now that I'm thinking about it I remember exactly how I got it off. After removing the rubber from the bearing I beat the hell out of the bearing case. This destroyed it and I kept beating it until the only thing left was the inner race. I then took a Dremel and cut the race being careful not to go too deep and hit the driveshaft. I then split the race with a screwdriver. When I drove the new bearing on I used a screwdriver against the side of the race, NOT on the bearing or outer case. The race is hardened steel so the screwdriver should deform before the race does.

Pretty much what I figured I would have to do - thanks for the info. Destructive removal followed by controlled chaos to install new bearing.

Did you take the new bearing out of the rubber piece before installing (you must have)?

Yes I did remove the rubber before reinstallation. I have since went through 2 more rubber mounts with the same bearing due to other troubles.
