Default Distributor Alignment Question

I had to replace the TFI. The distibutor had to come out. Is it possible that I could be one tooth off and it still run pretty decent but not perfect? I checked the timing a few minutes ago and it's about 8 degrees ATC. The only drive-ability problems are a pinging under heavy acceleration. As i try to adjust the timing back to 10 degrees BTC the engine starts running rough and the timing seems erratic when looking at the timing marks with the light. I am checking the timing with the spout removed.

alrighty then. discovered my own problem. stupid timing light(err, operator) light has adjustable advance **** on the back of it and it wasn't at 0 degrees. it's amazing how you can make the light flash any where on the balancer you like with that ****. all is well again. timing is all set now and truck is running good.

Well, it's brave of you to share that little screw up w/ us! Probably help one of us in the future (who wont mention it). And a year or so from now, we'll even probably forget it was you who did it first! (Actually that's pretty common w/ the dial types)

This is why I buy basic tools, no fancy ***** or anything, my gun is a basic Craftsman and it works fine.

Well, nothing like digging your own hole a little deeper, but here goes. I never used a light like that before. The ones I have ever used didn't have all that on it. Just a plain 'ol light. Didn't even realize that an adjustable **** was on the back of it. Lesson learned though. Aint novice wrenches great!
