Default Coolant Temp Sensor Question

Gents,
I was driving to church Sunday morning and, as I pulled into the parking lot, apparently broke the belt on my truck (89 I6 2wd no AC). So, when I popped the hood, saw the belt had gotten torn up and, presumably when it came off, hacked the temp sensor harness apart and pulled it off the sensor. The harness plug is basically destroyed. When I put the new belt on I put the two wire connectors back into the sensor and pushed the little rubber spacer down (that is inside the plug normally) to hold them in and, surprisingly, it still works and reads the temp.

BUT, seems like there are acceleration issues now when I start from a stop...like I'm holding the brakes down or something. It goes fine and seems to be running fine despite the harness just being two wires now. I haven't bought the harness connector to go with the new temp sensor that I haven't yet installed but will do so on Sunday probably.

Any idea if the two could be related? From what I read on that sensor website, the temp sensor helps determine fuel mixture, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

It isn't working. There are two temperature sensors. The one at the thermostat is for the computer and loosely controls engine operating conditions, shifting, etc.

The two wire one near the thermostat is the sensor as joshtowal said it sends info to the ecm the other one is the temp switch or sending unit it works the gauge.

The gauge one is at the back of the block on the passenger side.

So, does the coolant temperature sensor have anything to do with the possible hesitation?

I should have been more clear...I bought new temp sensor and sending unit and know where both are located. I'm just not sure if the temp sensor could be the cause of the issue that I'm having.

It certainly isn't helping.
