When I pull out of the garage in the winter mornings, I turn on AC and dial to hot. Blows warm in about 30 seconds.

Yeah I do that, turn on Max A/C so it keeps re-heating the inside air with the heat on full, and it removes the moisture from the air to get rid of the foggy widows and heats up quicker then just defrost. Once warmed up just turn on to vent and you're good to go.

Many newer cars do that on defrost to dry the air.

There is a mod I saw somewhere. The guy installed a switch, and a vacuum solenoid so he could flip that 'fresh air / recycled air' flap manually. Said it was real nice for warming up in the mornings. I'm considering looking into this.

There's already a switch.

Not that doesn't run the A/C compressor... or are you thinking elsewhere?

I know what you mean, like how newer cars are set up, they have a separate switch for A/C and air recirculation.

thats actually simpler than you think... it's on Recirc when on MAX AC... so just add a manual switch onto the low side switch wire... then you can have Recric without the compressor running in winter unless you turn it on...

Mine has the button for the compressor, but I guess it's only '87-'91.

Sounds like what he wants to do is recirc the air without turning on the compressor.

Btw the evaporator can be cleaned. Just remove the inboard plastic panel where the lines go in (easier said then done) no need to disconnect the lines, gently remove the evap. and clean it. I think most of us find just about anything you can imagine in there.
