Default Smog Pump Filter/Silencer

Can the smog pump filter/silencer canister be replaced with a small valve cover breather type filter and safely eliminate the canister? I want to remove the canister to make room under the hood and clean things up for a possible future mod. I'm thinking that I'll remove the hose clamp and attach the breather filter to the hose and then secure it up around the intake manifold. I'll be using a three inch permanent washable breather filter as my canister replacement.

Okay, I pulled the hose off of the canister and it has a good amount of vaccum pressure going to the smog pump. I let it run for a while and warm up with no issues. Revs and responds well with no CE light. I think I'm going to pick up a breather filter and drive it a while and see how it does.

Don't see why you couldn't. Grab one at a yard and cut it open.just a not for those of us with inspections. It may not pass a visual.

I've got to go to the yard tomorrow. Might stick some metal shears in my pocket and get some pics.

The breather blows out. You want to hook it up sucking in. Not sure if the filter element would suck through.

I'm looking at the permanent breather filters with no valve. I have one on my valve cover that works both ways with a screen on both the inside and outside. I'll find out for sure. Walk in Autozone, ask to test fit it and see if it works properly. If not, I' ll take it back in and say thanks and walk out. Lol

Just got done looking at the parts stores and I think Sean is right. None of the breather filters have an internal screen to allow the filter to be used on an intake setup. Any ideas for a similar sized intake filter that would fit inside a 1.25" id hose?

The filter comes apart right? What about replacing element with a small filter element for a carb? Like the ones we used to pop on a VW or go cart?

The one"s that I've found are a one piece permanent filter like a K&N. K&N does make what I need. It's $32, but I guess I gotta pay to do what I want.

Okay......almost complete DIY smog pump filter/silencer. When the rain quits and the sun comes back out, I need to disassemble and paint my little project. Anyway, here's what I came up with........all scrap material laying around the shop.......1 piece of 3/4" pvc, 2 2" pvc caps, scrap piece of 2" abs, heavy gauge screen.
1. Cut a piece of 3/4" pvc about 2" long

2. Drill a hole in one of the 2" pvc caps large enough to squeeze in the 3/4" pvc pipe and glue. I used pvc glue.

3. Cut a piece of 2" pvc or abs about 4" long and drill 1/2" holes spaced evenly apart.
