Default 1990 clutch problems...

G'day,

My 1990 is having some difficulty. I was taking it to my neighbors the other day to store in their barn for the summer and after a stop, the truck would not move when I released the clutch. It runs through the gears fine and I feel and hear them moving. The clutch pedal pressure appears good and the fluid level is good although the fluid is watery and dark. Nothing was noted during the short drive (any sound differences or smells) which was apx. a 1/2 mile from home. A side note worth mentioning was once the clutch pedal would not return from the floor for apx a half hour in the winter. We checked the fluid which might have been a bit low but could not find any problems and worked great for months afterwords. Thoughts..??

Thanks!

Is your truck a 4x4? Yes, is the transfer case shifted into Neutral?

With the pedal sticking to the floor you should check to make sure that the throw out bearing has adequate travel and is not sticking.

It is 4x4, a yard plow truck. I did try it in all of the drives with no luck although I can hear and feel it moving them.

Given my learning cure, I'll look into the throw out bearing...nice to know there is one I know a chap I am going to talk with tomorrow about it and will bring up the bearing.

Thanks!

The clutch is between the engine and the transmission. If the engine is running and the transmission gears are turning then the clutch has nothing to do with the problem. You have explained that the truck does not move forward when you release the clutch but you can still hear the gears turning. Try shifting into 2nd gear and then into 3rd. If the gears are still turning then the transfer case is stuck in neutral or something inside it is broken.

If the throwout is binding you will get some noise from the transmission but no go overall. The clutch could have also been toasted and finally let go. If there is some drag on the engine try in 4 low with the front hubs unlocked. This will lessen the amount of torque required to turn the gears, hopefully it will try to move. If not it could be the transfer case went out.

I may have mislead some folks, the sound I hear is when I am changing gears, not hearing anything when I release the clutch.

I appreciate the feedback!

YOu probably have the Mazda type M5OD transmission, I think there is a rubber dust plug you can take out on the bell housing. If there is you should be able to see you clutch moving if you get a friend to pump the pedal.

Worst case I could think of is the clutch disc has failed (busted) and there is no connection between the engine and tranny. But you should hear something rattling. Try bleeding the Slave cylinder.

Jack the truck up and try to turn the tires with it in gear. See if anything in front of the tranny turns.

Check the linkage to your Transfer case. Put it in 4WD and see if the Front tires try to turn when you turn the rear.

Like the others said it could be tranfer case related.

From what you said, previous to the above post, the truck doesn't move forward. With the engine running foot off the clutch you hear the gears turning. Now, from the above post, you do not hear the gears turning but hear them move when you shift the gears? So if the gears are not turning the clutch is not engaging. The slave cylinder is most likely the internal model. If it leaks it will not allow the clutch to disengage and you will not be able to get it into gear. If it leaked enough it may have spewed oil on the clutch and it is now slipping. You may have a worn disk and or pressure plate that doesn't clamp enough and the truck cannot move forward. The disk may have spun the centre and it is now useless. To fix any of this you will need to pull the transmission.
