Man i found a used timing light today in a pawn shop.. it was marked $20 i walked out the door for $10 .... I tested it just to see if it worked and it does.. so now ill be working on the timing tomorrow... Just a few more questions..

I've been kinda playing around with the distributor turning it with the SPOUT in just kinda timing by ear... so does that not mess with the base timing?? because i can move it around quite a bit before it makes any changes.. and also.. should i move it back in a certain position before I start messing with the base timing???

yes and yes....

the distributor does just that it distributes spark...so as you move the distrubutor you are moving when it is distributed whether or not the Spout is plugged in...

with the Spout disconnected that just put the timing in Base mode to get an accurate reading... withe the Spout connected the timing fluctuates quite a bit...mine jumps around 4 degrees

Ok.. so i should be able to just remove the SPOUT and time it from there.. then the computer will take over the flucuations when the SPOUT is put back in right??

yep...

make sure the engine is up to operating temp...then shut if off and pull the spout..start it back up and time it...once in time and tightened...shut it off and replace teh spout

Hmmm... Ok.. I checked the timing today.. with the spout out at idle its running at 12-14 degrees... But.. when i put the Spout back in and check it at idle it jumps way up past 20 somewhere... I i didnt count every tooth to know exactly how far.. but i know it was past 20... probably atleast an inch before where it runs with out the spout.. Does that make anysense? I thought the Computer only made the timing advance when the RPMs went up...

Oh and also i forgot to mention.. I took the fan belt off because it was in the way of seeing the marks.. Would that effect the timing?

lol you're funny....

the ECM controls the timing and at idle it will be at its almost max...mine is 28 degrees at idle with the spout plugged in...alot of timing is how they keep it lean...and clean or sorta clean...

it will vary depending on load...light throttle and no load the timing will be alot higher than more rpm and loading...timing will be less here as the engine wont like alot of timing under load unless you're racing and it can tell the difference...light throttle and loaded the timing will back off...
