Ok so if the middle of the V is 0 degrees, then I should be at like 10 degrees. That sounds a lot better to me, seeing as how I don't get pinging or any of the symptoms of over advanced timing. So I guess I'll just bump it up 2 degrees. Thanks guys.

each little part of the V is 2deg... so if you go from tip to tip on the ridges thats 4degrees...

the tip is 2deg from the bottom of the V...Smack center in the big V is 0 and the tip of the ridge out of the V starts 2 degrees....

these trucks can handle 20deg pretty easy....if you get pining after 12degs you either are lean or have a carbon issue...the balancers on these motors do slip meaning the timing marks can be off...

The very top of the tab mark is 0degrees...you may need to clean the tab to see the marks and numbers...I used degreaser and sandpaper
>-----0deg
>-----2deg
>-----4deg
>-----6deg
>-----8deg
<-----10 deg
>-----12geg
>-----14deg
>-----16deg
>-----18deg
>-----20degrees

notice how is jumps 2 degrees on the tips...

EDIT: I need to correct info brought to my attention on the timing marks on the passenger side....the BIG V is the 10degree mark where the factory timing spec is set...0 or TDC is the very top mark on the tab...

just curious(for my own knowledge) the timing bracket i posted has imprinted timing numbers....in the middle of the big V it says 10 not 0, im just curious because ive been under the impression that the big V is where the stock setting is which is 10' TDC, not 0'

hmm. I have another question too. I've been reading up on timing, and I have an egr blockoff plate. So I have no egr system, and also no smog pump. I've heard this effects timing advancement. I found this on another forum when I google searched....

"If a motor that is tuned to run with EGR suddenly is given a fuel mixture that is free of inert exhaust gas (which happens when the EGR valve goes out), the timing curve will be too aggressive for the combustion chemistry, and the motor will ping."

So how should I set my base timing to compensate for not have an egr system? Would I still want it in that 12-14 degree range everyone says is the sweet spot, or should I retard mine more than that?

you sure you are reading it right? mine says 0 right there...?

hang on i'll go look again to be sure....I could very well be wrong...I do know it goes all the way to 50+degrees though

EDIT: you are very correct my man...it is 10degrees in the center of the big V...I had to clean it a little bit to find the 1 in the 10

0 is at teh very top of the bracket...and it is in 2deg steps at the tips of the Vs...

I will edit my initial post...thanks

I just counted off the notches on that picture on the previous page, and if the big notch is 0 as Dr bowtie said, the last notch is 50. If that big notch is 10, it would go to 60.

nope 0 is not the middle of the V, it is indeed 10 TDC

I re-edited my post....and I said it went to 50+ meaning more than 50..I couldnt get at the whole tab to clean it so I cant see anything under the gunk...I can see the 50 and it isnt directly on the bottom....

blocking off the EGR is a bad idea in my opinion...the EGR will help lower combustion temps and will help combat pinging...the higher the combustion temps the less timing you can get away with...I'd rather have lower temps and more timing...

that helps all around...

in your case give it all teh timing it can handle...if it pings then back it off until it doesnt and post how far you got...I have had mine at 14deg so far and I am pushing it as far as i can and checking mileage as I go....I want to see where mileage is best...

you want to be more worried about Total Timing more than what the base is...

even at 14 my total is 28 and thats not near enough....you can get away with 40 pretty easy...
