Default Rattling when driving

Ok I have tried everything! I have a 96 f150 2wd. I will drive down the road and all I hear is this rattling. It doesn't quite sound like grinding tho. I changed the diff fluid and still nothing i even tried greasing up the yoke on the the drive shaft. Anyone possibly know what the issue could be?

So is it all the time/constant while rolling or only over bumps. Since you mentioned drivetrain parts I'm guessing it's all the time. One possibility is the drum brakes, I had a shoe fall apart and it sounded pretty bad. Jack the rear end up, put it in neutral and start turning the wheels/driveshaft. Hopefully that leads you to something.

It is only when I press the gas. That is what is making me wonder and from the sounds of it it's coming from the rear end. It almost sounds like a loose chain on a bike. But nothing is loose and my lift wouldn't make that sound when the gas is pressed. I'm at a loss.

Could it be something as simple as an interior piece rattling?

Yea, keep it simple for now, spend some quality time under the truck hitting / shaking everything. Could just be a loose heat shield along the exhaust system. Sorry I can't help more but I guess I would need to hear it to know what it could be. Look around

I suppose it could be I'll check around the exhaust it just doesn't make any since because the only time I hear it is when I drive and press the gas. Doesn't do it in park when I hit the gas and it shifts smooth driving. But thanks for the help I will look around and see if I can find anything I haven't looked at yet.

I noticed my 92 seemed to have a slight rattling while going down the road as well. Almost like a metal on metal pinging noise. Got to looking around and turns out it was a loose heat shield around the spark plugs. Thatd be a good place to check. Just start wiggling stuff around and see if theres any movement. Hope this helps! Good luck

Here's where the guy who was raised on Ford trucks jumps in:

It's a Ford.

Get used to it rattling. They do that.

But, seriously, look at your spare tire carrier, exhaust system and hangers.

I removed my spare tire carrier because of this reason. Kept rattling around while going down the road.
