The scanner is only $20-30 depending where you get it and well worth it if you can afford it. There is a guide on how to pull codes in this forum.

At this link just scroll down and you'll get to the codes (two and three digit)

. I have a book somewhere that I use, came with my code reader.

So i got to do a key on engine off scan and it did come up with the MLPS being out of range... as well as the vss which was unplugged during the test! surprisingly the only other code was the coolant temp sensor which accidentally got broken and i haven't changed it yet! I was a bit confused with the key on engine on test because i thought that using a scanner ment you didint have go through the steps of turning the wheel pressing the brake OD on off switch and tapping the throttle?! So i didnt do the test with the truck running but i did find what i think is the answer to my problems and that is the MLPS in the first test!

Having the scanner makes it easier to retrieve the codes, you still have to do all the test steps. That's how the computer tests those components.
