When are Air Bags the right solution/addition
#11
I just set mine up with WDH and airbags . running about 1100 tongue weight. Took a bit of time as I set it up both ways to verify weight transfer and measurements, but on my setup. I ended up 6-7 pounds in the bags just for stability and the WDH did the rest and put my front is within 1/2" to less of stock and I am not on the helper rear springs. trailer is within 1/2 level I will recheck everything it once I drive some and on flat ground. FYI with this psi in the bags, its about 1" of less rear ride height vs not using the airbags if you hook up without the WDH. I did get it setup within spec without the airbags, but wanted them for some stability. If I tried to run a bunch more air like 15-20 pounds, it would just counter act the WDH big time. 40lbs per 1 psi doesnt take much. I plan on a maiden voyage this week covering about 1200 miles and will see how it is.

But you are right, maybe you should choose what people buy or how they live their life.
You must be having a bad night. Hope it gets better.

So I'll say, normally I'm keen on NOT using airbags. Though I suspect with my level, bags may be needed to give me a half inch boost in the rear given my 33' TT with a 12k equalizer. Maybe, but I'm not sold on it yet.

The max ratings for my truck are GCWR 32100, so good to go there, max trailer 23500 so good to go there, 9650 RAWR, so good to go there. GVWR is 14k, with trailer at 17140 with 4 passengers we are at 13k. That leaves 1000lbs of head room. We could add half of the expected increase trailer weight (at max load) to the pin weight and be under both RAWR and right at GVWR. Since it is putting less than 26%(empty RAW=3670, 17140 GTW = 4400 pin weight for 8k RAW hitched up) on the pin now, that is not likely. We dont often haul 3 horses so never really an issue.

@SixShooter14 , do you mean good to encourage people to haul more than the rated payload ?
There are times when air bags are OK. But they don't change the ratings of the truck.

I worked on my trailer today, pulled all four wheels and hubs to check the brakes and seals. Good thing I did, one seal was bad and slung grease all around inside, but thankfully none got on the linings. In any case, when I was all done I moved it to my new pad where it is all nice and level and took some measurements.
Front unhitched height, 36 1/4
Rear unhitched height, 38
Hitched without bars
Front 36 7/8"
Rear 36
Fully hitched up
Front 36 (was one link too much, had some bounce too)
Rear 37
I don't know what this sag everyone talks about, truck is almost level when properly hitched up. With one less link my front will come up 1/4". My hitch weight is over 1000 pounds too.
