Default Long trip planning

I have a trip planned that will cover a bit over 3,000 miles this summer while towing. I know from towing that Oil life goes faster as we work the powertrain harder, but do people ever see an increase in oil consumption?

I tow every fall from Vermont to Florida and back in a two week span. It ends up being 3500 miles.

I see absolutely no oil consumption and have done every fall.

The trip is mostly I95 with cruise set at 70. The Airstream weighs about 4100#.

I’ve made a 2 thousand mile round trip towing across the continental divide 1-2x a year with the present truck since new, now at 204k miles. Sometimes in summer heat, other times during winter. Have never added oil to this engine between changes. Not a bad idea to take a quart along and pull the dipstick at fuel stops until you know.

I have never needed to add oil with my 3.5. Does OP have a 5.0? As mentioned, start trip with clean oil,have a spare qt in truck, enjoy your trip, sounds great.

I'm at 69k miles and ~25-30k of them towing and 0 oil consumption on my 2020 3.5 Ecoboost. If you're worried then just check the oil when you fuel up and carry a few extra quarts in the truck.

I towed heavy (7000+ lbs) over the Canadian rockies last summer. Things got hot, but never overheated. I did notice in that trip, a much higher than normal oil consumption, but has since gone back to normal.

Folks, it would be ideal to post what engine you have for reference and education.

Towing several times cross country I've never added oil between between changes. My trailer is fairly light at ~ 4,000lbs. 5.0 V8.

@henfield

Please let us know what engine you have. It’s not in the post or in your signature.
