2015+ HDPP trucks would also have a 7600 or 7850 lb GVWR are on the drivers door sticker. 7600 is for 17" wheels, 7850 is for 18" wheels
20xx-2014 trucks have 8200 lb GVWR and have 7 lug nuts on the wheels.

This is the easiest outside of the 7 lug wheels for the 2014s and older. Although, depending on how far back you go, early 2000s models were a 7700 GVWR (they have 7 lug wheels too).

Everything else can be easily swapped or looks so similar to the non-HDPP part that you can't tell. For example, my HDPP rear axle sticker that designates it as a 9.75B has already fallen off. Good luck telling the difference between that and a regular 9.75. An add a leaf makes a regular 2+1 spring pack look like the HDPP 3+1 or someone could just swap the springs. Reading the GVWR sticker is the easy way to tell.
Off course you can add stuff to really add to the weight capacity of the truck, but if you are stopped by the inspector an one of those highway inspection places the only thing that will determine whether you get a ticket is if your weight is equal to or less than your door sticker. The latest thing these inspectors are looking for and stopping is half ton trucks with larger trailers. IMO, it is a income issue for the various states.
I'm sure you're right and I wasn't thinking about the frame. I hope people aren't looking at the frame to determine if something is an HDPP. There is 1/100th of an inch difference in thickness between the medium thickness frame (HD) and the HDPP frame. Not something most people can see and not easy to get a caliper in there.
