I haven't looked at any F250's on the lots yet (well not at the payload stickers anyways). Is it safe to think that a F250 payload is in the 2200-2800lb range? F350's would be 1000lbs more than that? I'm only considering SWR.

Don't f350s have higher registration fees in CA?

Just for some 350 info, I have a SRW 350 (in sig.) with the highest possible GVWR - 11,500 lb.
The payload is 3224. IF you are going to upgrade in order to gain greater towing capacity, get a 350.

I don't know about CA, but you can get the 10,000 lb option that is nothing but a sticker that says your capacity is the same as an F250. Had I known the sticker was just a sticker, I would have done that when I ordered mine. The whole point is to simply lower registration fees for certain states.

You can't do that because then everyone would be telling you that you were overloaded because you were over what's on your sticker!

Aren't 250s basically the same as 350s physically? I've read before that only the 250 weight class keeps it at 10k gvwr, thus making the 350 wit the 10k pckg sticker the same as buying a 250.

I hate CA government.

That makes two of us.
As to whether the trucks are physically the same, I don't know. Ford's official documentation shows the 350SRW as having a thicker axle shaft and larger outer bearing. I've come across a few so-called "experts" who claim this is erroneous info and that there is no actual difference, but last time I looked on Ford's site the data still had the SRW 350 with the heavier shafts and bearings.
As far as weight concerns, my BIGGEST concern would be getting pulled into some kind of check point. So far I've never seen RV's getting weighed, but have been hearing stories of it happening in So.Cal. Maybe they are just stories, I don't know.
