Brake controller

From experience, don't tow anything larger than a single axle under 5K# unless you have a tow package or you could very well overheat.

FORD lifer
My truck didn't come with a factory controller either, and if I remember right after I replaced the back harness to go from 4-pin to 7 pin, I discovered that the front half harness was missing a necessary wire and I had to run a wire loom back with it.

F-150 Fordspeak 101
Okay, for you folks that can't aFord it and have to Dodge it, we need to refresh our memory on F-150 Fordspeak. That "upgraded rear bumper" in the max tow pkg is actually an upgraded receiver hitch.
The F-150 rear step bumper frame (under the plastic cover) is in three pieces, left, right and center. The center piece Ford calls a bumper "reinforcement" and it's available as three different configurations. All three configurations include the hole for a light-duty weight-carrying ball in the "step" part of the bumper, rated for a max of 500 pounds hitch weight. Otherwise, the three parts are for
1] a plain chunk of bumper frame without a receiver, or it can be
2] the receiver hitch in the regular "heavy duty" tow pkg, (or the receiver hitch in trucks that have a receiver hitch but not a tow pkg), or can be
3] the "upgraded" heavier duty receiver in the max tow pkg.
So if your 2017 F-150 didn't come with a receiver hitch, it's easy to R&R that middle "reinforcement" part of the rear bumper. Here are the applicable part numbers and discount prices from Autonation Ford White Bear Lake:
FL3Z-17D826-D / Reinforcement W/ MAX DUTY TOW $147.80
FL3Z-17D826-B / Reinforcement W/ HEAVY DUTY TOW $232.55
HL3Z-17D826-D / Reinforcement W/ O HITCH $113.07

The same basic info about the center part of the rear step bumper applies to all 2011-up F-150s, but part numbers may be different than those listed above.
And no, I don't know why the max tow hitch costs less than the regular tow hitch.
