5.0 oil consumption
#491
Sorry, I started a new thread and forgot about this. Here is what happened.
Took to mechanic and he said they couldn't find any leaks and chalked it up to lube tech didn't top it off correctly during oil change, About a week later the oil light comes back on so I take it to back to him for a compression test. He has it for 3 days and on the 3rd day i follow up, says they didn't get to the compression test as they wanted to rule everything else out before but they haven't found anything so it has to be piston rings. Recommends trading the truck in and not messing with a rebuild, since he is suggesting this as opposed to him making money on a rebuild I take his word.
So I start truck shopping and find a few I like and schedule a test drive for a Saturday, on the Thursday before the test drive I back out of my driveway and notice a drip line. Get out and take a look, it's oil. I crawl down and look under my truck to find oil everywhere. So I take it to the dealership and have them do a diagnostic, they call me a few hours later and tell me it's a rear main seal and oil pan gasket, $2,500. So I talk to a few friends who are car junkies and they recommend a different mechanic. It takes 3 weeks to get in but he diagnosis it the same and says $1,100. Takes him 3 days and when I pick it up he tells me oil sending unit needed to be replaced as well, total bill of $967. Truck is running great and no more oil consumption/leaks.

I love that the lazy first mech didn't bother with the leakdown and just said it would be rings as they couldn't see anything else - thanks for the update though.

Need to do a leakdown test whenever I get around to changing plugs again. I did plugs around 50k miles to try to solve a misfire issue and found the #8 plug to be rather sooty and oily. Haven't had it back out since but I'm curious if there is a ring issue or a valve stem seal issue... Either way its been 60k since then with no misfiring problems. She does drink a bit of oil, though. No smokey like my '96 Mustang did, though!
