V8 Explorer
Sorry if this thread is in the wrong section.
I was thinking about buying an explorer for my wife with a 4.6 2V. Anybody else on here have one? I know the 4.6 in these trucks and the Crown Vic's etc are just about bulletproof. But I've heard of reliability issues with the explorers.
Thanks guys

Yea, a 4six is a 4six, definitely great engines with a proven past...almost as good as the 5fours. Only reason why you get more longevity out of the 5fours is because they don't have to work as hard as a 4six does thru the years in these trucks
A vehicle w/4six is a good buy, just make sure it wasn't abused and the plugs are all tight. Check for evidence of head gasket leaks as these generally come from over heating. Just one episode of that can take away a lot from these modulars.
If you go a step further and check compression, - you'll get a real good idea about where that engines at health wise.
I've had a CV, Grand Mar and now an MKS and so far (knock on wood) haven't had to work on any of my cars...other than maintenance of course. They all ran great while I had them.

ive seen several taxi cabs (4.6's) in New York reach 1,000,000 + miles and still run. That's mind blowing to me... I haven't heard about those kind of numbers from express vans with the 5.4.
Don't get me wrong I love my 5.4's and would chose one over a 4.6, but a 4.6 still has a soft spot in my heart and I'll build one, one day.

I too favor the 5.4 as a truck engine (the 4.6 can struggle comparitively) but from a stroke and piston angle, longevitywise its better. That said, if two heavy trucks having a 4.6 and a 5.4 and being beat to hell everyday. It would be a toss up. Normal easy going? 4.6 gets the better chance in my opinion.

I brought up express van, and the numbers are in the 7-800,000. He's also not talking about a heavy truck either, sorry the facts hurt your feelers guys... But a 4.6 could push an exploder just fine. I went a tread his post, and I didn't see anywhere in it of a truck being talked about. Looks like an explorer and crown Vic was mentioned. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see it.

Well guys, I think I messed up. I was messing around on the explorer forums and found a few guys swapping 5.4s into them with only a tune and y-pipe modifications. I think I found my new project lol.
Look up Dora the explorer on Facebook it's a guy with an awd explorer with a lightning swap. Pretty badass, he's got a few vids on there too that thing moves.

A 4six is a good fit for that explorer. A lightning engine ? That would be a trip lol.
So these guys putting 5fours in the explore. Can they get the hood shut without modification ? Lightning ? I know the blocks aren't' that much taller, wider, but with intake.... The 5four w/truck intake won't fit the crown vic without chopping the hood lol...just wondered about the explorer and what kind of intake is used with the 4six.
