Well guys, I think I messed up. I was messing around on the explorer forums and found a few guys swapping 5.4s into them with only a tune and y-pipe modifications. I think I found my new project lol.
Look up Dora the explorer on Facebook it's a guy with an awd explorer with a lightning swap. Pretty badass, he's got a few vids on there too that thing moves.

Otherwise, other problems consist of the back panel cracking or falling off, window regulators breaking the holding tabs, GEM modules going crazy, front brakes and wheel bearing failing quickly, and upper and lower ***** joints, they are great. Even saying this, this truck is 100% better than the Chevrolet counterpart or the Dodge Durango. The stuff Ford's need replaced, are usually general wear items, except the tailgate and window regulator problem. The back panel is a design error they changed in 2006. The window regulator problem leave the windows partially down, or won't roll up, due to a plastic piece breaking off the mount. Again, just a design problem, they seemed to correct in the 06 up models.
Personally I love the Explorers, but I would be very careful about buying used. If you will be tight on money after purchasing one these SUV's, then you might want to consider another used vehicle. They can eat you out of house or home if they didn't have the maintanence they need. JMO, of course. I included a picture of my last Explorer, I sold this spring. It's trans went out at 91,000. I sold it at 81,000 miles.

Since you were out on the Explorer Forum, did see the major complaint with the 4.6 and the Explorer? They can't keep the automatic, 5R55 in them. They can not be checked for fluid level (no dipstick) and are a sealed transmission. Both of the Explorers I've had, didn't have transmission problems when I had them, but 3=6 months after selling them, both transmissions went out. I have the same transmission in my Mustang, but luckily it's not used with 4wd, so it should hold up better. Yes I have seen all the issues. Trans being the biggest for me. If I do it I will start with a 4.6 2wd that has a nice interior/exterior but has mechanical issues. Then find I low mileage 5.4 and a built 5r55s from level 10. They are supposed to be the way to go.
