6.0's are good motors after some bulletproofing. Without it, it has some issues that give it a bad wrap as the red headed stepchild of the diesel world. EGR block or delete it, upgrade the oil cooler, head stud it, and tune it and you'll never have any troubles from it.

I love 6.0Ls.
They can make plenty power and let's be honest a straight pipes 6.0L sounds better than any other diesel in the road.
As it was said bulletproofing them is a good idea but with some PMing you can drive it for many many miles and beer have to worry.
Whenever anybody ask me what to do on a 6.0L to help I tell them:
*ZooDad Mod - Free
*CCV Mod - Leas than $20
*4" Turbo Back Exhaust-$350ish
*Ford Blue Fuel Regulator Spring Mod - $60iah
*Airaid Dry Drop In Filter - $70ish
*Change Oil, Oil Filter, and Fuel Filters every 5K, making sure to drain the water sep while your at it
*Cetane Booster in every tank - $8ish(Treats 4 tanks)
*Rev X in your oil
*SCT Street Tune from Vivian @ Quick Tricks Performance
*Change Coolant and add a coolant filter
Enjoy it, if it has head gasket issues. ARP Studs, RCD EGR Delete Kit, Oil Cooler.
They do sometimes have issues with injectors but the Blue Spring and Rev X helps ALOT to save them, keeping you oil and fuel clean helps with that as well. Also the FICM has issues some times but out if all the friends that had or has one only 1 had FICM issues.

What is your job, if you don't mind my asking? A diesel for a kid in college (that I assume will be paying for this himself?) would scare me. I'm in college too, and I couldn't afford new injectors, etc. if I had any problems with a diesel. Not that my parents would've let me buy a diesel (from NJ and don't understand that 150k miles isn't that much), but maintenance is one thing that scared me away from them given my limited finances. If something happened, I know my parents would pay for it if I couldn't, but still.

The other guys seem to have covered the common 6.0 issues. From what I've read the FICM issues are related to weak batteries but I've never owned one personally.

I'd want the $5k+ worth of bulletproofing done before buying one.
