Default Transmission issues.

Hey. I have an 1997 Ford F-150 2wd auto. My transmission seems to slip from 2-3. If I let off throttle it shifts. My Overdrive button flashes when it shifts funny. If I run the truck through a automatic car wash it gets extremely worse. I’ve changed fluid and solenoids internally. My odometer also stopped working. Engine is still strong considering 200000 plus miles. Just any help please. Thanks!

Might be time for a rebuild. You can try changing fluid and filter and see if it helps but I think it's time for a rebuild

If you're OD light is flashing I believe you should have a code stored. See what it says.

Also is it just car washes or do rainstorms do the same? That could be a coincidence and you also have a GEM getting wet from a leaking windshield.

Your odometer stopping, there is a fix for it. A little solder and your good. Mine did the same thing.

Rain does effect it but the car washes are the worse and when drive the truck first thing in the morning it doesn’t do it and then it might go a week without doing it. A mechanic was supposed to run the code because the check engine light is on but that to flashes on and off sometimes then goes away. The mechanic said it was the solenoids in the transmission so I changed those but still the same problem.

wait, so you also have a check engine light, and that flashes sometimes as well?, i almost wonder if you don't have an engine issue that is being disguised as a trans issue

🤦🏼*♂️ I hope not. The engine seems to be running good for having 200000 miles on it. Would engine problems make my transmission not wanna shift into gear? Maybe a vacuum leak or something? The temperature gauge shot up a couple the past 6 months.

if the engine is acting funny then it can make it seem like you have a trans problem. Fix the issue with the check engine light then revisit the trans

Agreed, DJ. If you have a CEL on, get that resolved first.

Correct me if I'm wrong but should the CEL be intermittent? I thought it was always on or off, or constantly flashing. Flashing is a serious problem and the light won't go out until the problem is fixed and the code cleared before the light will go out. A constant on light will go out when the code is cleared or when the problem is fixed and after the engine cycles a certain number of times without the problem present, the light will go out. An intermittent flashing of the CEL light isn't related to a fault code?

I'm with Fordguy with this since there's a water issue involved. It was a PITA to pull the fuse panel and GEM module when my instrument cluster was doing some weird things but it fixed the problems. The GEM and fuse panel were covered in wet dirt and dust or maybe it was mold but cleaning it all was the solution. The transmission control goes through the GEM also with the Digital Transmission Range Sensor (DTR).
