Question Transfer case fluid????

I want to change the Transfer case fluid in my newly bought 2002 SC 5.4. Watched some videos and the guy STRESSES to use the Motorcraft XL12 Transfer Case Fluid and not Mercon V. Looking for it it appears its no longer made?? What is the CORRECT fluid to use in my T Case? Also, is 2 qts enough or do I need to buy 3?? Thanks for the info.....

This is the same stuff. Valvoline made the XL-12 for Ford. Mine took just over 2 quarts... maybe 2 1/4. So yes, buy 3.

Current Ford recommendation is Mercon LV. You can also use XL-12, if you can still find it at a decent price or any of the aftermarket products like the Valvoline above that meet the XL-12 specification.

Original factory fill was just good old "Mercon".

I agree with white. Valvoline Full Synthetic ATF is what's in my 2000 F150.

Uh, that's not what he pointed to.... although it's likely just fine.

Right on the Motorcraft website it says on the Mercon LV to "not for use in transfer cases". Thats what cofused me. They put out Transfer Case Fluid, then stop making it and tell you to use Mercon LV and then put on their website to not use it in transfer cases. Sound like theyre engineers are spinning in circles....screw them..I'll use the Valvoline!

It is confusing. In fact, if you order XL-12 right now from Rock Auto, you will receive LV. Just happened to me. I will just use it in my Escape with a 6F trans instead.

Personally, I know what works for sure so I stick with it. In years past, I've also used this with good results.

Don't know where you saw that currently, but when I go to https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...id=120&pid=425 I see the following:
(It would appear they changed the website sometime since I checked it last April)

Don't have a transfer case but Makuloco always has good stuff. I remember an old video. He implies that Motorcraft changed the LV, apparently. His first comment, from two years ago.

A while back I also found the contradicting info on this. I posted it on this page somewhere. Both were Motorcraft publications and one said not to use is in TC's, and then this one you posted says it's OK. I have heard, as Barebones video apparently suggests, that it has been "reformulated". Personally, it's too new for me to move on from the tried and true.
