Default Tow Package question

So, I've looked around and I can't seem to find a post that answers this question completely. all the threads I've seen always seem half answered. So my question is, what was everything that was included in the tow package.? I'm thinking of buying a 2001 5.4L supercrew 4x4 but it doesn't have a trailer hitch, hence, no tow package. If I buy it I want to add full towing capability to it. So what came with the tow package besides a trailer hitch receiver and a transmission cooler? Is there anything else I would need to add?

Thanks

In the current Fords there are 2 tow packages offered standard and HD.
Depending on what you intend to tow standard includes a trans cooler hitch and wireing for trailer and you should also have a electric brake control.
If your retro fitting an older or non equipped truck this would suffice in most cases. If you plan to tow heavy or often you need to upgrade engine cooling, tires, suspension, gears, mirrors, electrical and after a point you should look for a truck that is all ready equipped because nothing you do to your truck will increase the tow rating which could leave you liable if something happens and you are overloaded.

Mine came with the standard wiring for a 4 flat trailer light plug. That can be aftermarket though as I changed mine to 6 round plug.

Don't forget 4 wheel disc brakes, I don't think those came standard.

Thanks for the tips guys. I was looking through previous posts and somehow I missed replying on this one. The truck has disc brakes, and wouldn't be used for heavy duty towing, so if I get the truck I'd just put a trailer hitch and a trans cooler on it. Thanks again

This.
And I believe they come with the wiring harness for a trailer brake controller.
The previous owner of mine had that in the glove box, OEM ford trailer brake harness in factory plastic bag with the owners manual and all that

You'll have to get it wired up for the trailer lights as well.
