I remember mine whined a little when I bought it, but I thought it had gone away. Maybe it never did and I'm just hearing it again with the windows down, but I don't think so. I think it's a new noise. I would say it's the PS pump, because it acts up in the winter, but I've never heard one that doesn't change pitch/volume with the steering wheel.

At least the filter isn't full of metal.

Yeah... hopefully its just from a few too many dry starts.

I think this 1/4 inch spacer will do the trick.

Could the transmission make a noise like this? I just tried my stethoscope, but didn't find a smoking gun because for whatever reason, it's not making the noise right now. When I shut the engine back off, though, it made the noise for just a moment, and it sounded like it was coming from under the floor of the cab.

Yeah, it could be the pump, or even torque converter.

I'm thinking it must be the PS pump. My transmission is actually working better than when I bought it (did a full flush and changed to SynPower), but my PS definitely has issues. It acts up in the winter, and it stiffens when I try to do rapid moves, like when parking. It's got to be throwing its voice, so to speak. I also noticed it's started seeping oil (not yet enough to drip).

I hate mystery problems like this. It's going to drive me crazy until I can confirm what it is.
