terminals are tight with a little gunk, would that be causing it or one of many issues

Might as well disconnect the terminals and clean them good, don't forget to clean the battery posts as well - check out the lead going to the starter for corrosion. and look at any grounds for broken or frayed connections.
Sounds like a bad connection to me. Most common are the battery terminals.

x2 ^ battery terminals are the first thing to check and are usually the problem. also the + post at the starter usually corrodes pretty bad. does the starter make and grinding or odd noiises when you try to start it?

Congrats on getting your truck, glad that you may have the truck fixed, but let us know for sure at the end of the week
