As AK said.... I still think you're going to find you've got a bad pump. Flexplate could be an issue, but in my experience, they also make a pretty bad noise when engaged with the starter.... even when it breaks down by the crank bolts.

My Buddy just sold his shop to some @$$hole, so all of his show-n-tell stuff went with the business. He's starting a new shop by the first of the year though (working on the logo as we speak). Point is... he had a flexplate that had a 1 inch crack coming off one of the crank bolts, and it made a HORRIBLE noise. IIRC, it was off of a 5R55W.

BTW.... I've got a heat shield on the drivers side front cat that is rattling. It shuts up after it warms up. Need to either tack weld that SOB on there, or use the worm clamp in the TSB. Also, the muffler shop I go to will usually do stuff like that for nothing.

Well, my last questions. Will the pump fail unexpectedly, or will it get worse over time?

I didn't even think about the rings on the back of the pump. If one of them break, it allows fluid to pass by. That also could be the sound the OP heard. It still sounds like a front pump/convertor. I'm sticking with the pump as the culprit.

As White said, it can work for a long time, or just take a dump while sitting in your driveway.

Well I took it to the local transmission shop yesterday to see if they could pull a code. Nothing showed up. He suggested that I drive it straight to him and not shut the truck down the next time my OD light flashes. Also, he swears up and down that the noise is my torque converter. He said that if it was the pump it would never stop making the noise. I pulled the starter out and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I have a bore scope and I think I am going to inspect the flex plate with it.

In other news, I broke the mount that holds the transmission dipstick tube to the side of the engine. I was PRAYING that that was what was making the noise. LOL no luck.

This truck keeps begging me to buy a new truck. But no payments is where it's at.

The transmission guy suggested that I don't drive out of state and just keep driving until something catastrophic happens. lol
