Something ain't right (HELP)
long time browser but new member. Alright so I have a 1998 f150 5.4 with 240,000+ miles. Has been a great truck till last Tuesday morning when it spit out plug # 7. Research lead me to buying a insert kit 38900 by Calvin tools. Made the repair just fine. Went ahead and did all plugs as it was about that time anyway and replaced damaged coil on #7 as it was destroyed. Truck started and was missing never would clear up and it has the sulfur smell from the exhaust but wasn't throwing a code. So I figured I did something wrong and screwed up a coil or two changing plugs so put on another set of accel cops ( I know boys I should be using MC but I can't afford them and the others had been doing they're job for 4 years) but it's still doing the same missing and smell from the exhaust. I've checked all the vac. lines that I can find and yes that includes the one for the PCV. Still no codes. I can't drive this truck the way it is and I've ran outta ideas. I need some help boys
I do not. But I have a friend that does and I'm gonna try and get it to him by Monday morning. I just feel it's something I have done because it has fine before it blew the plug in # 7 and repaired with the tune up. Just trying too get ideas and check options before I get it to him.
Denso coils are an OEM supplier and you can get them at rock auto for $183 a set at rock auto. Pull cylinder 7's coil plug miss still, but not worse there the problem is with cylinder 7. Do a compression check on that cylinder. if you pull cylinder 7 and the miss is worse you most likely got a bad coil. You'll need to wait until it throws a code telling you witch cylinder or you could try pulling each coils plug until you find the missing one. Or get a scan tool that reads live missfire count. Good luck.
So I got my truck to friend shop and he read it on his scanner and got rich on bank 2 which should show the misfire is on that side but it want tell us exactly which one is missing. So I guess it's time to start pulling connectors and see which one doesn't make it worse and go from there. I'm thinking I got a bad plug or I cracked one because it did the same thing before the new cops
Well your excuse as far as expense of Motorcraft coils doesn't fly. Since a new set can be had from as low as 250. My last was 249 for the complete set. And like jethat mentioned, Densos are even cheaper. It would of been worth an inquire. Now you have pricey unreliable knock offs. Accel has good products, but here they are selling just the name on very weak builds. If your lucky enough to get all 8 to fire, they are never going to fire like spec builds. So yea, no excuse, - this info is heavy on this site.
Nevertheless, the 98's are probably the most picky with plugs. They WILL misfire with Autolites almost immediately (within 40 miles at most). As long as you didn't combine bad plugs with bad coils it's not a total loose.
I agree with others, find someone with a smart phone and the torque app. Use live data and misfiring cylinder will display. Or mode 6 for cylinder history if it has that capability.

Also, you may have melted your converter partially or totally shut. It can occur when/if you drive the truck with a misfire. Raw fuel ignites, exhaust stoke acts as a flame thrower melting the advance coating/honeycomb shut.
The engine will run like *** if that's the case, won't be able to drive it to far after something like that happens.
Once/if you get it worked out, torque those plugs down to 28' lbs...or you'll blow another.

I agree on the coils. It I don't know where y'all getting MC coils for 249$ but it ain't happening where I'm at. And I used MC plugs. Non of this happened until I blew a plug and decided to change plugs while I was fixing the blown plug. And I've ran the first set of ACCEL coils for 4 years with not one problem and that was with same brand of plugs. And also I wasn't making an excuse about the coils I was simply stating they were expensive and I couldn't afford them. And the truck has been driven less than 2 miles since it's been missing so I doubt the CATS are melted. And so you understand why I can't afford them is I have two young children that need lots of medicine and this happened at the time I needed to buy that medicine so they came first. But I've patiently wait ed for replays on here but all I've gotten is an arrogant answer and I've already said it was read on a scanner All I wanted was help with my situation. Thanks for your time
Sorry if that pisses people off on this forum but that's why I don't like them. If you have knowledge share it no one learned anything on their own because someone taught you me everyone what they know. Remember that guys
