some sort of liquid
I just checked my pasenger tire and all I saw was some sort or grey liquid it doesn't stain like oil
4x4 has been used recently

That grease from the axle. By the color I see, thats my guess. Look around the boot for holes, or cracks

The boot may be torn and the lube has some mosture mixed in with it, replace the boot and inspect the axle for wear.
