Default slight engine stumble

Have a 1997 ford f150(just purchased for my son to learn to drive with) that has a slight stumble when idling.(seems to drive alright has 264,000 km on it)
Also gets a rattle sound from engine when going up a steep hill or if you step down hard on it.( still has lots of power)
Could this be an ignition/timimg problem or just signs of age, not seeing any dark smoke out of exhaust when idling or going up hills. Doesnt seem to be lowering oil or water levels any amount.(have only put about 1000 km on it so far) Looks like it has new plug wires put on it recently.

5.4 or 4.6? What type of plug wires? Have you pulled the plugs?

It is a 4.6 liter engine
No I haven't pulled the plugs or plug wires to look at them yet. Will take a look to see what brand of plug wires where used.
Wondering if plug wires are connected to correct plug? Also need to check and see if coil packs are ok. Do you have a diagram for how plug wires should be run from coil pack to plug in cylinder.

I think this could be spark knock will try some octane booster in tank to see if rattling going up hills goes away and if it removes slight stumble at idle.

COP ( Coil on Plug) for sure. if they have an orange dot on the COP its OEM and at 260k they need to be changed, I change my COP at 80k just to be safe. spark plugs for sure take a look since your already there. these truck love the motercraft plugs. also make sure you gap them properly if not they can cause problems.

msg me if you have any problems

Don't waste your time with this one rex1, your truck doesn't use this type of ignition system.

This 4.6L engine has 2 (4 coil) packs on each side of the block no COPs.
Going to look up location of the vacume hoses that could cause this type of problem.
Anyone have any suggestions on most common ones to check out.
I will check vacume hoses at EGR valve first. I dont have a vacume pump so this may be tough to do. (maybe I can rent one)

You can rent one at autozone or oriellys basically for free.

Don't forget oil for it!

Check the elbow on the back of the intake. Elbow at pcv valve.
