Default Remote doesn't work when engine is running?

Wife locked the keys in the truck while the engine was running. We don't have a spare key but I programmed two remotes. I thought no problem...grab the other remote to open the door. It didn't work. I swear I programmed and tested both.
Had to call a tow truck guy to get it open. This morning I went out to reprogram the remotes so I had the two working. The spare remote opened the truck! I was very confused. Then it hit me maybe it doesn't work with the engine running. Turned on the
truck and the remote doesn't respond.
Is this normal? Doesn't seem like it should be.

Edit: Oh, it's a 1999 Lariat 5.4L if that matters at all.

See your owner's manual for the answer.

I didn't have one but I just downloaded one and found the answer. "The remote entry features only operate with the ignition in the OFF position"

I wonder why? Thought I had a backup plan if the key got locked in there but looks like I'll have to get another key made.

Thanks for the confirmation. I didn't have a owners manual and I just downloaded one and it says it right in there. Gotta get some extra keys made.

Just have a spare key cut (doesnt need to be a chipped key) just a key that opens the door. Either keep it in your house or ziptie it under the frame out of sight to be used in an emergency. $10 and youve got your piece of mind back.

I don't like the fact that it won't unlock while it's running. My Mountaineer and Explorer have a key pad. I just added a key pad to my F150 by purchasing a used door handle. The key pads work while it's running, but before that I always carried a non chip key(I still do)

Thanks guys. I'll just get a spare non-chipped key cut and hide it somewhere on the truck. That sounds like a good idea. I'm interested in adding the keypad to it though. I'll have to look into that.

I use my keypad a lot.
When i run at home, i put my housekey in truck, lock door. Unlock with keypad.
When i go in gym, i leave truck keys and wallet in truck. Unlock with keypad.
Many times i need something, dont want to go in house and get key.

Keypads are awesome.
