Default Quick caliper question.

Truck is a 2000 5.4 4x4.

So I did the expy brake swap less than a year ago. Parts included were expy rotors and 7700 calipers with the dual steel Pistons.

I have a caliper sticking on the front left. I took the tire off, checked the slides, they are free and move very easily.

Next I unscrewed the bleeder, fluid came out but the rotor was still hard to turn. Pried on the inside pad to push the Pistons in and it has freed up.

I went back and pressed the brakes and repeated one more time and it's the same.

So I guess it's looking like my 6mo old caliper is junk already?

Old brake hoses will screw a caliper right up. Ford has the worst.

Forgot to mention that those were changed 6mo ago with everything else. Also I'm finding a jelly like substance on the fluid.... I hope this doesn't turn into something worse.

Jelly, - not good. That can only happen if the fluid has been contaminated. If it hasn't been flushed in iduno 3-5 years I'd start there. Hopefully to much damage hasn't been done...unsure ? Might have to replace the lines again..don't know. Calipers, - no tellin, but I wouldn't doubt it. Try a flush first, pump some good stuff thru it. Water contamination can be the killer in this system.

I was told if you pour the fluid into a cup of water and it mixes then it isn't too bad, but if it sits on top of the water and won't mix then all seals or anything rubber needs replaced. I tried this and it mixes in. All of the jelly like substance falls to the bottom. I have no choice but to replace this caliper first. But tmrw I will go have a flush done and pray that fixes the sticking problem.

I also read you shouldn't mix a mineral based oil with synthetic because it will contaminate the system. I can't remember for sure but I might have used synthetic when doing the brakes.

Something is seriously wrong to have jelling. You can rebuild the caliper, IF needed. I've used the steel piston caliper (w/Brembos) for years (since 08 up front). The truck still stops on a dime. Same pads, no dust (NONE), love the set up!

Last time I flushed the fluid was back in 08 as well (need to do that again lol).

I've never heard of the fluid test you performed. I go by color, tint or haze. If it's real bad it will be dark and hazy. Dark also means contamination of course, but if you take a good look at it, you can see "how bad" it is, = dark hazy w/floaties ...bad. Jelling, = beyond bad IMO...(down right criminal lol)

Too bad about the caliper though, those are good ones, but yea, they have to work.

Caliper rebuilds I trust have been by Cardon w/steel pistons (it's an option) @ RA.

Quick caliper question.-image-870751996.jpg

Criminal! Lmao! Well it's been at least 5 years and I'm not easy on her. Got a new caliper but I'm running out of daylight so flushing the fluid will have to be tomorrow. Gonna button her back up so I can shut the garage lol.

So I've got the new one on, would a bad wheel bearing feel like a sticky caliper because it rolls freely for about a half turn then it goes back to hard to turn and easy again. Feels kind of like it might be something else...

Did you use DOT 5 fluid? That would be a big problem and possibly cause the seals in the caliper to swell.
