The main difference between SCT and most other manufacturers is that the SCT programmer is a true flash device. Flashing is the act of physically over-writing the file on the pcm... AFTER it has stored a true copy of the stock file. Which is another difference, some manufacturers store pre-existing copies of "stock" files and simply put them back on the truck when you "return to stock". This will get you in warranty trouble and is why SCT takes a little bit longer the first time you tune the truck. The stock file is being stored first before the new tune is installed.
Signal "tweakers" on the other hand intercept and modify signals as they go to and from the pcm. SCT is not a signal tweaker.
Now don't get me wrong, both methods definitely work and increase power, but the downfall of tweakers is that they almost never modify the transmission.
As calibrators, our main purpose is to get everything in sync together including the trans. When we add power the trans needs to be updated to accept and deliver this power. Slip times, trans pressure, shift points, torque converter lockups etc. It's important stuff to make sure it's all tuned together.
Another benefit is the files themselves, no two tunes are the same including custom tunes from different sct vendors. This same concept applies to the tuner and it's preloaded tunes.
Over all, I recommend doing your research and checking reviews. Make the decision on your own.
