I have two keys programmed and working. Used method from manual, doesn't work yet. Diagram of key positions does not make sense. Off where you insert key is actually pos two.
Tried programming keys in Forscan and can only get 2 to work. Doesn't matter which two. Can switch them up and only the first two work.
2003 F150 Super Crew XLT 4x4.
I got one key with truck. Call that O. Purchased another from Lowes that would be a clone. Did not work. Call that L.
Ran Forscan key programming and it and L started to work.
Picked up another on Amazon. Cal that one A.
So running Key module in Forscan, I can have L and A, O and A and L and O. But not all three at the same time. Right now I have O and A working.
So I don't know if the Lowes key is a clone, or just a poor one.

If you bought it from Lowe's (or any other place that never hooked up to the truck to program the keys), it is guaranteed to be a clone as you noted. The add-a-key method will not work. The clone should have worked identically to the original unless defective.

I'm fairly certain that the forscan key programming would fail with a clone key.
I also have tried the third key programming and can't get it to work. I would be interested if someone has a solution, but this has come up a few times in the past so I don't hold out much hope.
Than do the forscan erase all keys and program new keys steps.
I dont recommend , high pucker factor for that
I tried once when couldnt find my second oem key...bought stratec keys...got it cut.. then tried to program... didnt work.....dont know why..... But it didn't, it actually didn't do anything.
Fortunately my original key still worked even though forscan didnt seem to complete the programming.
Later found my other original key in wifes camera bag... Where she had misplaced it..and used ignition to make another....that worked fine.
Unless you need OEM key just go have a locksmith make you a copy and clone it
Still got another stratec key in its packaging.... That needs a home
I've done the Forscan erase all keys and reprogram many times, I ain't skeerred. I can only get the truck to accept two keys at a time. It's really not programming the keys, It is just reading the chip and recording the value. I have four keys (found another Amazon key, had it cut) and what ever combination I chose it only records the first two. I kind of need three keys so wife and I can have one and one left at home. This is our out in the wilderness rock hunting truck and having spares is a plus. The 12 minute wait to read the keys is very tiresome. Probably will wind up getting cloned keys made. At least the amazon keys were cheep.
It is like the PATS system stores two keys only - At least on my truck.
