Po442
I changed my fuel filter about two weeks ago. I checked for leaks, but everything was good in moving.
Over the past few days, my scanner is picking up the PO442 DTC, but note that it is not a fault code, it is a pending code. I do not have a CEL. I noticed the code comes and goes intermittently on the scanner. It has disappeared several times, but comes back as a pending code only, so far.
Now I did not unhook the battery when I changed the filter, would this have anything to do with the system not resetting correctly? Could this be related to fuel injectors, which are also new?

Got it. My apologies.
So basically... I should be looking for a possible leak in the EVAP system.
Every forum says try the gas cap first. Do these trucks have a history of the gas caps going bad? Local ford has them for $22.

No problem, -that's a good link AK put up. Fuel cap can cake up, -not really THAT common. Could be the problem though. You can blow them out with compressed air like you would a expansion/degas tank/bottle for the radiator. I can't tell which model year you have, but the discontinued the canisters for these trucks. I disconnected the canister bypass hose and filter do to this and found the pre filter in the bypass tube (washer type line filter) was plugged. I was getting the 443 I believe, -that was over a decade ago, -no repercussions.
You can also pop the vents on the tank and make sure they are working. They pop out after rotating 1/4 turn clockwise. You'll need WD 40 to assist, it's a must or you WILL break the vent. Also have to remove the hose first, WD40 is very much your friend with this procedure lol.

Mine is a 2000, 5.4.
Is the evap canister supposed to have an open port on this box? It's the passenger side. Just got the p0442 code a week ago. Gas cap is clean/clear of debri. Fuel hose and vent hose are only about a year or two old. Sprayed soapy water on all the hoses and didn't get any bubbles. Noticed this port was wide open

Huh, I don't recall seeing that port on one in the past. I know the 98 doesn't have one. But they changed that set up through this gen. Mine was discontinued, but I was at rock auto and apparently they have them now. My truck was at Ford when they informed me they were discontinued. I couldn't find one looking myself either at the time.
So yea, like mentioned a few posts up, I removed the line that is in the back to get rid of the DTC's. I think mine was a 443. The exact line I removed was #9 on Fords diagram of the system. I don't have that diagram handy, but I'm sure it would turn up in image search. It's been posted a ton.
