Default performance chips

Looking to install a Perf Chip in my '97 4.6L.... Hoping for better mpg by lowering rpm's as well as increased horsepower. Got any recommendations?

Same here, I'm looking into the edge Evolution cs. I've also been told the sct products are good for our trucks. But the edge seems to help mpg more.

To be completely honest, you will only see gains of maybe 1 to 2 mpg from a tune no matter the manufacturer. If they claim much more then that, it's simply not true in the real world. How you drive your truck, keeping tires properly inflated, will affect your gas MPG more then a tuner. Not to say a tuner doesn't help at all, but most folks get worse gas mpg after installing a tuner cause they want to stomp the gas more often as the truck will take off quicker then stock. :-)

And there is a difference between a chip and a tuner. A chip is something that you solder in, and leave it permanently, those are primarily for OBI one systems, prior to 96. A tuner is something you plug into the OBII port on 96 up vehicles, reflash the PCM with a tuner, then unplug it.

OP, I checked for your 97 4.6 and the SCT SF3 #3015 tuner does have a tune specifically for your engine/year with gains of 11 horses and 8 feet of torque for a stock engine. A good tune will also firm up shift points, the truck will shift quicker and more smoothly, and you can adjust your rpms at both idle and at speed as well.

And in case you didn't know, check out the link in my signature. Currently running a group buy offer for the forum on SCT tuners. :-) Can gaurantee you it's the lowest price around.

Unless you run a diesel you really should t expect much from a chip or tuner. There only useful if you have loads of aftermarket parts, even then It's negligible

Sorry but that's wrong. I have plenty of people with them who see a huge diffrence with a ton of aftermarket parts or having a diesel. There very usefull when ur wanting torque and power or if u run bigger tires and are lookin at a cheaper alternative to regearing.

Not true. Although, granted, you won't see AS big gains as you would on a diesel.

SCT tune on a 09 5.4 on a bone stock engine is 21 horses and 44 feet of torque. That's nothing to sneeze at!

EDIT: DOH! Ninja'd!

That's also a big reason too, for a cheaper regearing, some more HP/Torque and hopefully squeeze some better mileage.
