Default By passing the A/C

Im going to be by passing my A/C untill I get around to fixing it. Should I buy the bypass pulley (plastic for $40 bucks) or is there another way. Like buying a shorter belt, and just not wrapping it by the A/C Ford urges to remove the conpressor, and add the pulley. But is it just a waste of a little money, and time?

If its not locked up, just unplug it. Small plug on the compressor.

Just get a bypass pulley. If it locks up, you are stranded as is.

Sorry to sound a little dumb here. But why would the bypass pulley lock up?

He means the compressor locking up.....And to go with the by-pass pulley instead of un-plugging

And I agree !

Ahh alright, I knew about the compressor locking up, but didnt know if without it, somehow the pulley would lock something up. Thanks for clearing that up. Thank you both.

The pulley is just ran off bearings. Worst it will do is rattle and not lock up. Compressor locks up, you are breaking the belt and thus stranded.

I would buy the compressor clutch kit. Comes with field coil, pulley and hub. Sounds like that is all you need. A/C may still work when done. The bypass pulley is more time because the compressor has the be removed. The clutch kit can be installed with compressor still in the truck.
If you really want to be cheap and the A/C hasn't worked in years. Take the hub and pulley off the compressor. Get the proper bearing for the pulley and press it in the old pulley. Clean the compressor housing where the pulley slides on and install the snap ring. Shim the hub out or leave it off.

with some 1/4" tools pretty easy to remove the compressor. Can be a tight fit, but nothing too bad. I think I got one online for around 200, so that would be my suggestion.
