Default P0102 Code

I pulled out the driveway and drove 1.5 miles to a stop sign and, after releasing the gas to brake, the engine stalled right away. After turning off key and recranking, the engine would only run with my foot on the gas slightly while braking.
When I got back home, I plugged in my scanner and it pulled a P0102 (MAF). The truck is a 2003 XL 4.6 and has 268K on the odometer.
What should I check before just replacing the MAF sensor?
Thanks in advance.

I would clean it with electronics cleaner first and see if that helps.

Read the possible causes. Some later model engines don't use MAF they use MAP. I looked on Rockauto and it only shows MAP for the 2017 5.0. One possible cause of the code, apparently, is "Loss of vacuum to the MAP sensor can trigger this DTC". A good ocular assessment of what you have should be your first step. Good luck.

I picked up a can of MAF sensor cleaner today. I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks

He's working on a 2003 4.6 bones, not his 2017.

Oops.

He could also unplug the MAF and see if it runs better. That would tend to take out the question of shorted MAF sensor wiring. But a good hosing of the sensor is worth a shot too.

The word seems to be that only the Delphi sensors are worth buying.

Well, I found the culprit - one broken wire and another that was snagged in the wiring assembly. This harness seems to be right scarce online. The Motorcraft # is F68X12A690J4CPO. Doing a Google search only brings up Ebay, but it says sold out. I haven’t checked out the local dealers yet, but I might have to bend over and go for it. 😡

Reconnect the wires and reuse it, easy fix.

Problem is, the wire broke right at the rubber seal where it enters the plenum. I'll have to solder and heatshrink on both sides of the seal.

Just saw the last post. I'd try the wrecking yard or get some good sealed crimp connectors.

Those wires are inside the filtered air area. Reconnecting with some good crimp connectors should be fine.

And don't overlook the local salvage yard.
