Ive heard that they arent as good as they used to be but I did end up buying one this last winter for my Ranger anyways and so far ive been impressed. The truck sits most of the time and it still starts great and it doesnt die if I want to park the truck by the fire pit and blast the stereo for a while. Thats alot more than I can say about the two Motorcraft battery's I had in it before.

Optima batterys are made by Johnson controls, the same company that makes interstate, die hard, duralast, everstart and a few others.

I know of 3 Motorcraft batteries that lasted over 10 years before they had to be replaced, and 0 that were replaced in under 5 years. Some of the handicap accessible vans I work on require a lot of power to run lifts and automatic doors and such and still need to start after and on occasion I upgrade them to 1000 CCA red top Optimas from the 650 Motorcraft OE batteries. They definitely have a lot more power and reserve, but they cost a lot.

I would only upgrade from Motorcraft to Optima if I had some serious power sapping additions like multiple off road lights, winches, boomin sound system or whatever all in one vehicle. To be honest my truck has an Energizer battery that I found at work 2 years ago and god knows how long it was sitting around before that. I charged it up and put it in and even though it sits for like a month at a time it fires up every time. If I was to buy a battery it would be a Motorcraft 850 CCA and I wouldn't have a single doubt.

I run a yellow top in a Cherokee. Has never given me any problems. I love the fact that it is a gel battery and a deep cycle battery. My father is looking at going twin optimas for his 5.9 I6 since it rattles around so much. I'm looking at installing one for a 4BT swap but haven't decided whether it will have a high enough CC and whether or not I should just get a commercial diesel 12v.

Ended up getting the Everstart again since I haven't seen a need to pay so much more for something that works like the cheaper stuff

The gel batteries are great for vehicle that see extremely rough roads (rock crawlers/rally trucks) because they are sealed and don't leak. Also great for vehicles with older diesel engines like the rougher running 7.3, 5.9, and 3.9 as well as tractors where the vibration can just shake all of the acid out and corrode everything. My father was looking into dual optima yellow tops to help him get every last amp available to turn over his 5.9 in subzero temperatures but that's like $350+ just for batteries...
