I have a 2002 F150 Lariat.

Several months ago I ran I to an issue where the truck would get really hot before the gauge would finally start going back down. It would only...only do this first thing in the morning on cool or cold mornings.

So I started with the normal stuff. Thermostat, made sure the water pump was working. Temp sensor was good. Water and coolant were good. I got to reading a little and I saw where some people suggested a head gasket leak.

With that in mind I took it to a shop where they run the coolant test to see if you have exhaust or fumes in your coolant water/reservoir. The test seemed like it was a little positive...I watched him do it but the color didn't change too much at all.

Anyway...I did some reading on the Blue Devil head gasket sealer and thought what do I have to lose. So, I pulled the thermo and ran and flushed and ran and added the sealer and ran and reinstalled the thermo and away I go. Not a single issue yet.

BUT.......I also noticed something else. Before doing the sealer I was consistently losing freon somewhere. I would have to add a can about every month to month and a half or so. AFTER doing the sealer I haven't added any freon and the AC is working great.

So, the question is....is it possible that freon was leaking into the coolant via the condenser (maybe) and gave a false fumes reading? Because I haven't had an issue with either since the sealer treatment.

Ths for the answer. I do realize that they are separate. But a good explanation as to why the fumes have disappeared and the AC never needs freon now escapes me.

Ideas?

Are you sure your pumps okay ? In the past this has occurred when the pump isn't pumping like it should, when the pump fan has deteriorated to the point of low flow. But, if you checked all that out already....This also happens with the wrong stat. You should have a 195 or close to it.

Stat is 195...has a 192 in it. As for the pump...if that were the issue and I DIDN'T replace it, wouldn't the issue still exist?

It's just odd to me.

Sure, it would gradually get worse. I've seen them break right off the pump from corrosion.
