Default Oil Filter question

Got a quick question here. Changing the oil on my 99 4.6 and ran into a problem. The filter I pulled off looks nothing like the 820S Motorcraft I picked up at O'Reilly. The one that was on the truck was a Valvoline 105. Little guy that resembles the 400S filter. Let me upload a picture. Just wondering if you guys have run into this before. This is the first time I've changed the oil on this truck. I have a drive from Cali to North Carolina coming up at the end of the month so I'm doing all the things the guy before me didn't do. Thanks in advance.

That new filter looks just like the one that works on my '02 FX4 w/ 5.4. Hard to say, but looks like the last bonehead used the wrong filter?

The sticker on the window said it was changed at a Nissan dealership. The more I get into this truck the more I realize I rescued it.

That is the correct filter. Took about 20 seconds to look it up on http://www.valvolinefilters.com/

Looks like the "bonehead" had it right.

Thanks. So both appear to be the correct filters the Motorcraft is just larger.

Yes they are both right. I've found that "Lube Line" filter, the ones that meet specs have been redesigned to cover multiple vehicles.

For example, at my shop I put on Carquest filters made by Wix. The direct cross for the Purilator family of "Lube Lines" is the 173. They will be labelled as Purolator, or Pennzoil with the Quaker State having a different variation on the numbering.

The reason they made them smaller was to fit into the hard places Ford located these filters. Especially the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis which takes the same filter.

Fitting this thing in there is proving to be a hassle, making me think I need the 400S. The motor is from the Windsor plant if that changes things. Miss my old Bronco.
