I have the same problem with my 97 F150. I took it to the dealer ship for a recall, and inquired about getting it fixed. They charged 90 to check it out and wanted another 400 to fix it....... unbelievable

yeah good questions what recalls are out there, ive been told to check the cable, if the cables in tact its the gear inside the cluster and ill never read the correct mileage, but with 250k on the truck showing mileage isnt going to affect it so much in the long run but i do like tracking my gas mileage and oil changes so i intend on making it work

My response only is for digital instrument clusters. (Had my *** reamed by a young pumk because I did not know what he was driving)! Again if you are digital instruments use the search button for "solder joints". Alot of write ups about the subject, if you are analoge gauges, check cable, pull cluster and check mechanical gears and so forth.

Bill,
I read on another site that the 97 does not have a cable, only a bundle of wires coming off the diff. going to the cluster. What do you know for sure? Should I get under the truck and be looking for a cable or wires? Oh well, guess when I pull the cluster I will find out if there is a cable hooked up,right?>>> By the way, what would be your best bet on my problem,if the odom and trip stopped working? Everything else is fine.>>>> Also on another note, so maybe you can pass it on to future questions/problems, I had a fuse to my auto head light switch blowing ever so often untill it staeted smoking, and thats when I found the problem>>> A wire was getting smashed by the gear column. I put some of the brush on electrical tape on and now I can use my auto headlights again in my 1997 Lariat with 270K miles on it, that has never needed major work!!! Been one great truck!!! Thanks for the help! Chris
