Your gem doesnt contain any RAM or anything like a hard drive. Its really a bunch of triple 5 timers in monostable mode. You have a few processors that only work when functions on the truck are initiated. So if you remove your GEM for a week and put it back in, it needs no flashing. Thats a myth. I have had mine out numerous times, and even deleted a few things inside of it (door chime) and other things.

If you are to replace the GEM, make sure you get the one that fits your truck code. If you have a 4x4 with power everything, you will need that GEM module. Not one from a base truck.
