Default J Mod time

2003 XLT 4.6L Reg Cab 2wd

I just installed 3.73 gears with a limited slip in the 8.8 rear and holy talk about best bang for your buck for performance upgrade. The truck originally had 3.08 gears with open diff.
Now I hate the 4r70w trans. When spinning the tires through first it has this crappy pause between 1st and second gear. I have an old Hypertech programmer and cranked up the shift points but this does nothing to help that horrible lag between gears under WOT.

So hopefully the wife will leave me alone long enough to tackle the J-mod on the trans this weekend.

Any tips from those who have done this?
What size drill bits did you use?

Link to what the hell I am talking about http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny...ybusiness.html

Found a great video on youtube

Not much interest in my thread, but I will share the results in case someone cares.

I completed the J-mod to my 4r70w trans. I drilled exactly as the guy in the video I posted since my trans had the same separator plate.

It's no hard to do, just plan on making a mess and be detailed.

This thing hits every gear hard, especially 1st to 2nd. I love it for when I'm romping on the truck but normal driving it's too much.

One issue I am left with figuring out is the overdrive light started blinking as soon as the first time I started it after the mod. I figured this was just low fluid, I did have to add 10 quarts of Mercon 5 back in. Even with the fluid back where it should be the light still blinks. The overdrive works as it should and the trans does what it is supposed to so I'm not sure if I boogered up a sensor or why the OD light flashes. I guess I'll figure that out eventually.

My suggestion to others that wan't to do this is drill the holes smaller than the video says. I'm not sure if it is because the Truck has a different torque converter or what but the Crown Vic guys don't say it is as hard of shifts as I am getting.

Different programming for transmission shift controls. The trucks have higher line pressure from the get go to help make the trans last longer.

That would make sense. I can set the shift points higher or lower with my old hypertech programmer, maybe I should try lower to see if it helps.

Changing the shift points isnt goig to effect the firmness of the shift. Its shift pressures that need to be changed.

I thought that was all the programmer did to change the shift point, was raise the pressure. I have allot to learn about how these work.

In a way it is. But changing the shift point just changes at what speed the shift pressure is elevated to make the shift.

I took the truck to autozone and they pulled dtc for the flashing overdrive light, something to do with the pressure solenoid.
So I pulled the pan and found the hard wire harness was not plugged in tight.
I fixed that and looked over the solenoids.
Overdrive light no longer flashes and Now it is perfect! At low speeds its smooth but will still bang gears when you romp on it.

I take back my comment about drilling the holes smaller, I like it where its at. It was not the Jmods fault, it was the trans being in "safe mode" causing it to run the line pressure at max all the time.

Glad it worked out for you. You're much braver than I am!
