Perhaps there's one of those top secrete Tornada's wedgied into the intake pipe ehh ? Has to be something as spectacular as that I expect.
I dunno. The mileage reported is accurate, the speedo is accurate according to Mapquest. For the sake of transparency I made the exact same trips in January and didn't even hit 17 mpg. Since then have done a good bit of maintenance including a new intake manifold, a coil, plugs, etc. etc. Perhaps the mileage I reported earlier was just a fluke. The truck has just over 107,000 miles.

If this thread still has life I will report updates.

Or run for cover, there's a lot **** flying here.

BTW- The 4.6 and 5.4 get identical mileage, - unless there's something wrong with your truck.

I think there's a few getting their truck and volkswaagon mileage mixed up. Or the really suck at math and round up to their happy point. Peehaps everything they do is one way,- down hill ? There has to be some illogical answer for these impossible claims.

Bury it,- they're probably looking for this kind of attention anyway.

Just filled up. 328.1 on the trip odo, put 19.56 gal of 87 in until it clicked off.

16.8 mpg. Not too bad for the mostly around town driving I do (hardly any highway miles).

That great and about right for that truck,- with good maintenance, driven normally.

I am going to agree with tackle! With my speedo off 8kmh with my new tires I only noticed a 1 mpg difference it wasn't different, after calibrating the tires, gears and squat of the tires, I'm dead on GPS, and milage, even from ideling for 30 minutes a day, to only letting the truck warm up for 10 minutes a day tops I didnt notice a difference in mpg change on a calculation of 2 tanks, the difference was in decimal points. When you get that paycheck tackle, I'm looking for a new headlight and dinner switch haha

I feel like people that are getting 17+ mpg with their trucks from this Gen either are lucky as hell, chipped and programmed it to hell, or doing math wrong.

This has always been true, but now with computer engine control and knock sensors that can detect detonation and command timing pull before the human ear can detect it, few are aware of just what extent it effects fuel economy. Install a RX oil separating crankcase evac system and see the results first hand. Prevent the ingestion from the start.

I tried a set of Borg Warner's and it chugged the fuel. Funny thing, the truck ran perfect, - no difference. Had the right part numbers. Anyway, switched back to Bosch at the time and the mileage went back to 14, like flickering a switch.

If your truly want to try and increase mileage, the best you can do is run a dry air filter element (oil free). One that doesn't embed foreign matter, like say a good nano fiber element. They're cheap, -so might as well. That way the MAF will remain clean for a long period of time. You have to clean the MAF by hand, alcohol and Q-tips. Don't just hose it down w/that MAF cleaner crap lol.

Run a Motorcraft PVC valve only. It's the ONLY valve with large enough margins for this engine.

Run more efficient spark plugs, like iridium fine wire plugs.

Use Motorcraft 02 sensors, - they are much more stable than Bosch. Here's a tuning data about that, -

Proper intake and exhaust, tire pressure and of course driving habits.

Most of it could be common sense. It's a damn truck!
All great info and accurate. Good contribution!

The 4.6 and 5.4 have always been real close in MPG, shows it is how the engine is used has more effect on the real world results than the engine chosen many times. The GM Corvette would always get 28-32 MPG from 1997 on and still run 13 sec 1/4 mile times, the C6 (2005 first year) would get 30 plus, and the new C7 (11 second 1/4 mile car) will get as much as 40 MPG now it is DI. Weight, gearing, how driven all effect MPG., but one undeniable fact is eliminate the oil ingestion issue and all benefit not just in MPG, but engine life, power, etc.

Agreed with this. Had a '98 4.6 with 5 speed. It got .5mpg better on the road but .5-1.0 mpg less in town pulling a landscape trailer.
