Default I知 going to do my first engine replacement...

I have a mechanic who is a family friend who痴 gonna charge me $500 to make the swap. My truck has 196k and a cracked head gasket.

I am looking to keep my truck for a while (I love it), and am looking into remanufactured engines. For those who have any information or experience.. what company痴 have you used/that you know are good with both quality parts and warranty. I want to make the most informed choice possible on the brand.

i would like to spend 3k or less on the reman. I am located in south Fl. Thanks in advance.

I have a promar remanufactured engine. If I remember correctly I paid 2200.00 shipped and could not be happier. 3 1/2 years later and probably only 50,000 miles no problems.
I would recommend you buy ford intake manifold gaskets and replace all your sensors that are hard to get to i.e knock sensor, head coolant temp sensor. I also replaced water pump, exhaust studs and nuts and starter since mine was over 6 years old.

Mine is AER. 47k no problems.

They only supply to installers , ie you cant just buy one.

The only i have read enough bad things about to really say think hard about is maybe ATK.

But do problem, complaint, rip off search on every one and read.

They are in the lead as of now. It is amazing how nearly every brand of reman has bad reviews. My buddy replaced his with an LKQ engine and its going very strong, but it seems like luck at this point.

I am open to a used one with under 100k miles but I haven't been able to find one.

The Promar quote is $2300 which would put me under 3k with installation. Ford sells a reman for $3800 but seems tough to justify the $1600 unless someone has input on that

Well, dont neglect fluids water pump. Consider new radiator and hoses while have easy chance.

Call local dealer parts counters, they wil likely sell you the ford for 15-20% less over the counter. They can sell an engine and make $, or notand not make $.

Fords remans and ford racing products parts/engines are made by AER. Due this AER has actual ford specs and tolerances for parts, not reverse engineered specs. May not make any difference, just throwing it out there. AER was formed in 1940s to rebuild engines for ford, and has been partnered with them since. They also do remanufacturing for other oems, gm, chrysler, subaru, nissan etc.

When comparing prices...some come with plugs, gasket kits, tstat, even water pump and oil. And some dont. Then theres the parts that went into it. All new pistons or???. New rods or???. The oem powder metal rods should not be reused say engibe builders....but some remans do.

Get complete new parts list from each mfg. And their testing protocol. One mfg is known to only bore oversize bad cyl, sending out mixture of piston sizes. A bbb complaint for one had wrong size pistons......obviously not spin tested for compression after mfg , or oil pressure. Quality can vary.

They all will have a slick website saying how great they are.
Which show clear images and even video of production lines?
Which have detailed info on parts, testing, quality control?
Which say what parts are new, what rejected?

so even if I have a licensed shop install it I can稚 buy one? I知 overwhelmed by choosing a brand. I was sold in Promar but it seems like every company has a sketchy warranty.

Well, thats because its a lot of money, and there is likely more chance for a quality engine to fail in warranty period from abuse, than defect. And only a teardown by an expert will determine cause of failure, and that expert will be the mfg. For instance prior engine misfired with hg leak, and run that way melted the cat. User doesnt know this. New engine melts a piston from the obstructed cat. User fault.

Theres always risk of getting burned. No way to avoid unfortunately. Except purchase a brand new vehicle.

Which is why the used engine route was great option. Just not so great nowdays when they are all 125k engines and still cost you $3000 to pay to put in. I do think the more you pay...the risk is a little lower. Tradeoff.

A good reputable installer should check and make sure things are in satisfactory condition, or replace things that arent. And not give it to you until works 100%.

Aer only sells thru distributors, not direct. An installer has to buy engine from a distributor that handles them. They distribute to Ford dealers directly. But not to non-dealers. Not hard to track down, just a few phone calls.

"Non-Ford dealers call 1.800.753.5237 or 972.417.2582 and we’ll direct your call."

Finally got one ordered. $3400 for a Ford Reman direct from the dealership. They bartered with me a fair amount. It痴 supposed to be rebuilt to OEM specs and has a 3 year warranty parts + labor that can be done at any ford dealership
