You'll be looking atleast 8-10k in parts alone. You'll need a adapter plate, and aftermarket trans contoller.

you will be paying like 2k for the motor alone then you got parts like custom motor mounts adapter plate for the tranny ... by the way that transmission wont hold the power of a diesel engine who ever does this would probably just tear through them left and right its a waste of time to use the ford tranny your gonna need a lot of customization 8 to 10k would be a good estimation when its all said in done but maybe 5 if your good with custom welding and machining

$4,000-5,000 usually for everything if you use a rebuilt engine.
Used engines are a lot cheaper of course, and would put it in the $2-3,000 range like you said.
Of course it does depend on what size engine with the 4 being the cheapest. A full kit for the bigger engines is $2-4,000. The super high figure of $10,000+ includes the cost of the truck that is to be converted, I saw the write ups and stories.

I looked into doing a 12v swap. With buying a complete running engine, using my built 4R100. Using a completely stock engine it was right around $7000. Let alone any modifications for more power. If I was to do it, I would build a P-pumped 24V. A 7.3 powerstroke will barely fit but I'm unsure of all the work required to get a downpipe to fit..
