Default F250 Engine Size

Hey all,

Well, I have another in a seemingly endless line of dumb questions for everyone.

Time has come to think about trading up from my current rig (150 XLT 4.6). We bought a toy hauler last year and it's time to get a truck better suited to pulling the hauler. It's 19ft, 4700# empty but has a 10K loaded rating.

We're currently looking at 97-03 F250's, but I'm wondering about whether to get the 5.4 V8 or the 6.8 V10. Most would automatically think the V10 would be better for towing, but I didn't wan to "assume"

Am I going to be better off with the V10 than the 5.4?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Yeah, I know the V10's are thirsty, but I figured it could be much worse than the mileage the 4.6 gets when it's towing the trailer. (maybe 8mpg if I;m lucky)

Our route to riding areas is filled with hills and grades (including the infamous Cajon Summit).

i bought my 97' F-250 LD w/ the 5.4L from a guy that pulled a 30 ft tag-a-long travel trailer and he claimed he got 13 mpg pulling. but it is on a 1/2 ton body and just a supercab i still get 18 mpgs just driving around if i keep my foot out of it

If your pulling a toyhauler get a diesel.. 7.3. Don't get a 5.4 or 6.8.. you will average like 10mpg with the 6.8 vs 7.3 diesel getting like 14-15...

Thought about that, unfortunately diesel is not an option.

The vehicle will be the wife's everyday driver and only pull the hauler when we're going somewhere (maybe once a month, or every other month).

Gas mileage doesn't so much concern me, as I noted earlier I'm already getting crappy mileage with the 150. I'm more concerned about going up hills and such as SoCal terrain is somewhat mountainous.

whats wrong with the wife drivin a diesel?? there the same size as 250s with the 5.4 or 6.8, same turning radius and same stopping distance.

and i kno you said your not concerned, but the mpgs on a diesel are better than the 6.8 and 5.4

and diesels rock up hills. we pull 28 foot, 20,000lb peanut wagons up some damn steep hills

Call it a personal preference, or whatever, for a myriad of reasons we will not be getting a diesel. I just need something to pull my hauler better than my 4.6L V8 and was looking for input as to the pros and cons of the 2 larger gas engines.

ok i understand. id go with the 5.4

itll drinkk gas when your towing but at least itll be pretty decent when your runnin empty

the v10 gets 9 mpg at best. stock

and the 5.4s are easier to find parts for if it should ever breakdown

Just from the info given you don't have to get the f250 the f150 5.4v8 can tow 11300lbs and your wife doont have to park a f250
