Engine swap help
Hi so I have a 2000 f150 with a 4.6l and it has developed a rod knock I’m looking at just replacing the engine. I found a 4.6l from a 97 and I know there are a couple differences between them. What all would I need to do to make it work in my 2000
I don't know, but there's probably no shortage of 4.6's that are drop ins...... I'm always amazed that people will consider something that's not a direct replacement...... It's usually because they got something free somehow
Although true for 5.4 V8’s, 2000 model 4.6 F150’s did not utilize the PI heads- that was reserved for 2001+.
97 and 2000 4.6 should be similar enough to make the swap relatively hassle free.

2000 models should be PI headed. They got the bump to 220 horses. Maybe a mid-year change, but it definitely happened.
I’m sure COPs rather than twin coil packs will be the obvious difference.
Either way, a 97 model has enough differences with sensors to be a PITA.

Neal, the 2000 is a transition year, that is correct. It could have either. It was a late year change. Ford did the same thing in 97 on the Explorer. You might have a GT40 head, or you may have a GT40P head.
There are "some" 2000's that have shown up with PI heads.
Either way, I wouldn't use a 97 motor in a 2000.
