Default Engine swap

I have a 2000 F150 with a 4.6 and a 2003 F150 with a 5.4 Want to swap in the 5.4. Is it possible and what is different.

The 4.6 will possibly have an 8.8 rear, vs a 9.75. I think there was a minor change in the trans in 02, some gear speed sensor(???) so, an extra wire? Or, the need for something "automatic" in the old trans, that you won't have, so, dunno if your trans can be retrofitted, dumbed down. The puter? Above my paygrade. *I* would get a Chilton's/Haynes on each one. They might be a single book. That might scratch the surface. Maybe need a spring upgrade in the front. This will be interesting to listen in on.

And IF he can, in Calif, at least, I think, he CANNOT swap an engine. But IF he did, the new putor would have a different VIN recorded and engine so SMOG would be a.No Go, as I doubt a Calif Dealer can flash a.puter to "fix" a VIN issue.. yet they would need to if a new puter was required. Door stickers might be a sticky issue, and hood stickers... but that is a Calif issue.

I was under the impression you Could Swap Engines in California, as long as the engine was the same year or newer than the vehicle it was being swapped into, in his case it is 3 model years later, and the same type of vehicle, in his case both are f150's, I don't see the problem. Things must have changed with the law, where does one find these new laws?

The OP wants to swap engine SIZE.. To a.smaller engine seems like a no-brainer SMOG deal, but, should it be overburdened, he would not be in a sweetspot, but lugging the engine, and make smog.

DMV has a motor vehicle code book. Maybe $15. Comes out ea 2 yrs I believe. Last time I bought one it required 2 mgrs and a.Sr Tech who had a cheat sheet under her blotter. Easy to seel one to a cop, but to a civilian requires some other computer sales input code. I used to get 1 ea yrs.

I thought he wanted to swap IN the 5.4, I must have misunderstood. I'm old school, swapping IN to me meant he wanted to swap OUT the 4.6 and put in the 5.4, that's what happens when you get old.

Two questions:
I don't see anything that would indicate that the OP is from California. What am I missing?
The op seems to be a one time poster who posted, waited an hours for enlightenment, that left and hasn't checked back. Did a California blackout cause an interruption in their internet for the last couple of days?

I mean... how would CA know if it was swapped? Just put the 4.6 cover on the 5.4 and call it a day.

Oh, You are right. I was just expressing that to swap in a smaller engine seems like it would make less smog and CA should not care - but they DO.
