Badass, JB, and forum buddies.

I'm going to bring this back up and ask a question.

The OP says he want to put a 04, 5.4 into an 01. Both being 2v engines, has anyone done this very swap? What necessary parts she be taken from donor vehicle? Just thinking how nice it would be to have the heavy cranked 5.4 with PI heads for lil Red.

I've personally never done this 5.4 swap, and from all my parts research, the blocks seem to have the same mounting, same bell housing mount, etc. Other than intakes, and possible EGR problems, what else is there that needs to be redone. I remember the 2 sensors going to one from the left head and valley, but is there any other item(s) to watch out for?

The reason I am asking is, I picked up a 103k motor out of a 2v 2004 Expy for $350 from a friend. Nice quiet running motor, but knowing the modulars, there are always annoyances that pop up when doing swaps.

I bought the motor for the swap, but if it is a problem idea, I can always find a SD guy and sell it to them and make a few dollars, but would rather use it if possible. The 04 Expy motor shows as a direct fit to the SD up to 04.

Anyone enlighten me on swapping out this way?

As long as they are 2V's its a pretty easy swap. Just make sure you get the proper flexplate for the trans. The 4r100 and 4r70 use different flexplates. Wiring harness should be exact along with enginge mounts and bell housing if its 2v.

If OP is wanting 3V, well thats just asking for alot of work and more problems.

Thanks for the reply.

I just ran all the numbers down and the short block will interchange, so that makes it a fairly easy swap out. The 04 has the 8-9 thread spark plug holes, so that is a big bonus.

Doing a bit more research on the 04 2v, it has the bigger crank and heavier rods, which is an upgraded design. They also list both cast and aluminum blocks in that year. This one is cast.

Since 97-98 don't have a PATs system, I don't see any kind of electrical problem, just using the original harness. I may have to switch injectors from the 98 to fit connectors, but that isn't a big thing. You have to use the 98 intake anyways, so the whole top is off the engine, why not do everything while its open. I'll be using factory intake gaskets to rule out the leaking problem with the newer heads, so that is one thing that is remembered.

Any other thoughts of possible problems?

What I'm not comprehending, is why the Expedition motor only shows fitting Expy's and Navigators. I'm wondering if there is an oil pan change or hopefully not a front cover. I'm reading where in 03 they redid the cover fitment on one of the lower left bolts. Not something you think about being a problem. I don't see a difference, but there has to be something that is definitely different between and Expy and F150 in 03-04(H). Anyone know what that difference might be. I hate surprises. I get enough of them on my own, without an engine being another one to add to my list. lol

my 2003 expy had a different intake manifold than my sons 2003 screw. it looked different in other ways too, I just don't remember specifics other than the intake.

my guess would be any differences in engines would be in the Intake, timing cover, valve cover, the bolt ons that can be swapped around.
these things aren't hard to swap around, though it is time consuming and you have to be very carefull about removing Fords rusty bolts.
I've swapped around several sets of timing covers, oil pans and rocker covers so swaps could be completed, the base block/heads have always been the same. sometimes holes for sensors are moved or there are extra ones but they can be plugged if need be.
gasket sets are pretty pricy but
I've found that all the rubber gaskets are reusable, sometimes a little sealer if they're questionable looking but if they are still pliable I'd reuse them.
usually the only gasket I buy is the one for the trans input shaft, about $10.

Which engine are you referring to ? I mean, no critical info posted. Confirm engine so we know that you know what your talking about and it pertains to questions asked. That would help a lot. Is it drive by wire? 2v Correct, cast block, is it a 5four???
