Default Engine replacement--need some input

Long story short, my first truck (97 F150 Scab 4.6 4x4) will need a new engine soon my mech says. The original motor made it to 140K. Replaced that with a reman, and it is not oiling properly and will die soon I'm being told. I had my favorite mech and a 2nd one check it out. This engine has roughly 60K on it. I'm gonna go back with another 4.6, but this time I would like more power, without sacrificing reliability. Supercharging isn't outta the question, but is def an expensive option! Ive read parts on using 5.4 heads? PI heads? Any advice on how to get a few more ponies is appreciated!

Oh, and to explain sinking so much money is the old truck, it has huge sentimental value. I cant dream of parting with it.

Get a reman with pi heads. You will need to replace your intake with a pi intake. I believe good for an additional 50hp. Promar engine remans charge an additional 300 for pi heads. Not sure about exhaust manifold fitment. I bought a promar reman probably 18 months ago for 2167.00 shipped and core return shipping is included in that price. Another thing you can do is change the gears in the rearend for additional get up. But remember you will also need to regear the front to use 4 wheel drive.

Did they use ford timing components?

jstockert I believe I saw one of Promar's engines on Ebay this weekend. Like 3 yr/unlimited mileage warranty? Did you notice the extra horses and has your engine been solid? I'm not really wantin to regear, jus would like to have a tad more pep if I'm replacing the whole thing anyway.

I definitely wouldn't get another engine from wherever you got the first one, or I'd take a serious look at your maintenance program, 60K out of a reman sucks.

Nice looking truck!

X2, I also think the original 4.6 dying at 140k sucks. A properly maintained 4.6 should easily see 200k and well beyond. I'm curious as to what oil and filter the OP is using?

yea I think 140k is pretty low too but since I have one with 140k and making noise, I decided to not pick on that one.

Yes 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. I did not get the pi upgrade, didn't really have the extra money. Very solid motor, I pull a trailer daily with probably a total trailer weight of 3500 lbs.

The original engine blew a head gasket at 140K. I can't say exactly what oil&filter ive used at every change, although ive never gone more than 4k miles between services. No cheap oil/filters have been used. Same program with the reman. This truck is very near 19 yrs old and jus now has 200K on the clock. Neither engine has been abused. Meticulous isn't close to how I treat this rig. I have every receipt from every last thing that has been done to the ole gal. I'm sure I bought a cheap reman last time. This time I will most likely go with a Jasper!
